GUERNSEY: TOWARDS 2040

As the only aerial gateway to its namesake island in the English Channel, Guernsey Airport is vital to the daily business of the community. Three miles (5km) southwest of the island's St Peter Port capital, it was officially opened in 1939, though regular passenger services did not develop until 1946. The original grass landing strips were replaced by a 4,800ft (1,463m) tarmac runway in the 1960s, which is still in use and provides an arrival and departure point for almost a million passengers per year. In 2012 work began on a major improvement programme - Airport 2040 - believed to be its largest construction project since the 1940s. When complete, it is expected to deliver the airport's infrastructure needs for the next three decades.
