Resource-rich Mongolia has one of the fastest growing economies with a GDP growth of 7.8% last year. As the economy expands bringing potential travel industry development, the current Chinggis Khaan International Airport is struggling with some safety and operational issues. The former relates to the city's air pollution which is affecting the visibility in winter months, while the second issue is caused by insufficient space available in the terminal's international arrival and departure areas. Foreseeing these factors in mid- 2000, the Mongolian Government later submitted an official request to the government of Japan to construct a new international airport financed by a soft loan from Japan. The loan request was made in June 2006 and approved by the Japanese Government in 2008. The estimated cost of the project is around US$560 million - the largest ever granted through the official development assistance programmes provided by the Japanese Government to Mongolia since 1990.
