Transborder temptation

History may view Frontier Airlines' launch of Denver-Calgary service this May as a watershed. Its decision to compete against United Airlines on the route might not initially appear remarkable, but the move had greater significance because it was the first time that a recognised US low-cost carrier took advantage of the recently expanded US-Canada open skies bilateral agreement to offer what the two nations call transborder service. By doing so, Frontier broke with the formula originally established by Southwest Airlines and emulated by several other US low-cost carriers (LCCs) of eschewing international flying.
