Arizona Republican Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake added language to a major defense bill that was signed into law on Dec. 23 by President Obama that amends Section 213(c) of the FAAModernization and Reform Act of 2012 to require FAA to review controversial NextGen flight path changes that were granted a categorical exclusion from environmental review and to take steps to mitigate the negative effects these changes have had on communities. The senators said their provision ensures that airports and communities have the opportunity to fully engage with the FAA before any future flight path changes are made. However, it could slow the process of implementing Performance-based Navigation (PBN) procedures at busy airports across the country.
