On Oct. 11, NASA issued a solicitation inviting companies to join its Urban AirMobility (UAM) Grand Challenge, which seeks to strengthen public confidence inthe safety of UAM as this new technology integrates into the national airspace.The goal of the Grand Challenge is to improve UAM safety and accelerate scalabilitythrough integrated demonstrations by hosting a series of UAM ecosystemwidechallenges beginning in 2020.The series of challenges will support the FAA in developing an approvalprocess for UAM vehicle certification, develop flight procedure guidelines, evaluatecommunication, navigation and surveillance requirements, define airspace operationsmanagement activities, and characterize vehicle noise levels.
