LONG ISLAND TOWNS MOVING TO SUE FAA OVER FLIGHT PATH NOISE AND EMISSIONS

On Oct. 24, the Board of the Long Island Town of North Hempstead, NY, approved a resolution to pursue legal action against the FAA to alleviate excessive noise and pollution caused by low-flying planes approaching and departing JFK and LaGuardia airports. The legal action would be taken in consort with other local villages that are affected by aircraft noise. To date, the villages of East Hills and Upper Brookville, also located on Long Island, have signed memorandum of Understand with the Town to proceed with the lawsuit. The Board’s action would allow the Town to pursue inter-municipal agreements with any villages that are interested in suing the FAA. This would be the first step toward litigation, followed by the retention of a law firm with expertise in this area. Legal costs would be divided between all the municipalities.
