When the aircraft division of the Swedish company saab-Scania first approached Fairchild Aircraft of the United States in the late 1970s, regarding a feasibility study into the launch of a 30-seat regional turboprop model, there seemed likely to be some doubt over the manufacturer's plans. Despite the fact that the company's previous experience in military projects and in particular military fighter and bomber aircraft, had made it a household name in that sector, its only commercial project ╚D the Saab 90A Scandia (a twin-engined, low-wing all metal passenger aircraft with a capacity for 32 seats) ― ended in failure in the early 1950s. Just 18 aircraft were built for operation with ABA-Swedish Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and Brazilian airline VASP.
