During World War Two the advancement in aircraft technology meant that larger and larger aircraft were developed to carry more and more troops and equipment. After the war many of these were converted into airliners and were eagerly snapped up on the civilian market as the number of people travelling by air steadily increased, Washington's downtown airport - National (see article last month) - was surrounded on three sides by water, which severely restricted its potential for expansion and so a second location in the Washington area was sought to handle the larger aircraft being produced.
