Management at Bristol International Airport in the South West of England had ended 2006 in bullish mood. New scheduled routes to Diisseldorf, Krakow, La Rochelle, Marseille, Norwich, Rijeka and Tenerife had helped the country's ninth largest gateway to handle a record number of passengers and maintain its position as one of the UK's fastest-growing airports. With airlines having already announced plans to inaugurate new flights to Galway, Gerona, Gibraltar, Nantes and Stockholm, 2007 was expected to begin in a positive manner. However, very poor weather in the first week of the New Year plunged the airport unexpectedly into the media spotlight. Activities ground to a halt when concern was raised over the safety of its runway, then being resurfaced.
