Long-haul low-cost carrier Oasis Hong Kong Airlines applied to the Hong Kong Court on April 9 fora provisional liquidator to be appointed. On the same day, it cancelled all flights until further notice. The company had been operating for 17 months and had reached 'breakeven' point (in terms of profit/loss) after only five months. However, like many other carriers, it had been hit by fuel prices that have risen by 73% over the last year. In addition, the decision to buy instead of lease aircraft, combined with intense competition from other carriers flying into Hong Kong, is thought to have contributed to its present position. Its fleet had comprised four Boeing 747-400s and in March it said it had planned to increase the figure to 14 aircraft by 2011.
