Situated on the side of a mountain in the French Alps, Courchevel airfield's heyday was in the 1980s, when it was commonplace to see the venerable four-engined De Havilland Canada Dash 7s. They made perilous landings on the 1,762ft (537m) Runway 04/22, which boasts a 18.6° gradient hemmed in by mountains at one end, making go-arounds impossible. The turboprops carried winter sports enthusiasts to the Alpine resorts.
