All aircrew holding an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) must undertake twice-yearly proticiency checks. They are usually completed in a flight simulator and examine both the pilot's competency and ability to cope with stress in unusual or emergency situations. These recurrent checks are a serious business. Failure means a pilot will be grounded until they complete remedial training and then re-take the test.
