THE FUERZA Aerea de Chile (FACh, Chilean Air Force) has been formally tasked with finding a replacement for its T-35A Pillan training fleet. Undersecretary of Defence, Cristian de la Maza Riquelme, confirmed that the FACh had been authorised to begin selection of a new primary and basic trainer. Plans call for 40 new trainers to be ordered. These are required to have digital instruments and a glass cockpit. The new trainers should start replacing the Pillan between 2024 and 2025. A total of 26 T-35As were introduced from July 1985 and nine remain airworthy. Recent attrition losses occurred on June 14, 2017 and March 29 last year. Five more Pillans were sold to Guatemala in 1998. The type is expected to reach the end of its service life between 2020 and 2028.
