Airbus and Boeing have had such a dominant share of the aircraft manufacturing market since the 1990s that they have been referred to as a duopoly. The competition between the two airframers is tight: in 2013 Boeing delivered 648 aircraft and received 1,355 firm orders, while Airbus delivered 626 aircraft and took orders for 1,503. As the next-generation narrowbody aircraft enter into service several rival manufacturers are advancing with their own aircraft programmes. These aircraft represent the first serious challenge to the big two in decades. The two more established manufacturers, Brazil's Embraer and Canada's Bombardier, are looking to challenge Airbus and Boeing in the 100- to 130-seat aircraft market. This is an area where Airbus and Boeing are arguably vulnerable, particularly towards the lower end of this market.
