Avionics repair and NFF testing

Avionics account for about 15 per cent of the component maintenance costs of a typical airliner, according to a recent Aerostrategy study for the US Aeronautical Repair Station Association. The manufacturers of the equipment do about 45 per cent of the work, airlines do 30 per cent of it in house, and the remaining 25 per cent is third party work conducted by either airlines or independent shops. The independents, though, are watching that share erode as the OEMs move to tighten their grip on the aftermarket by restricting access to the documentation needed to keep test and repair procedures current.
