Think of the US west coast's aerospace industry and a significant volume of manufacturing, be it airframes, components or avionics, immediately springs to mind. But the scene for aerospace has dulled in recent years as other industries have become increasingly high profile in that region. Jo Murray finds out what is happening on the west coast. Blame it on the internet bubble if you will, but the dazzle of the US west coast has tarnished a little in terms of its aerospace industry. That region of the US is associated with the high-tech boom and bust, the growth in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, as well as a host of research and development that has grown up around these sectors. Meanwhile, the west coast's traditional manufacturing industries have stumbled and are in need of support. They are still soldiering on, but workforces are shrinking in the golden manufacturing states of California and Washington.
