Power-by-the-hour deals for engine maintenance are gaining in popularity, but does total care mean the best value for money for airlines? As cost cutting becomes the norm for most airlines, engine maintenance providers have had to adapt by introducing more cost-effective business models. All-encompassing power-by-the-hour agreements, or total care packages, offered by engine maintenance providers (MROs) allow airlines to share the risk of unforeseen problems with the MRO, as well as outsourcing its engine management and spreading the cost. Although these so-called total care packages eliminate the need for in-house maintenance facilities and expertise as well as providing spare engine support, you do have to pay for the privilege. But are they worth the extra cost?
