Commonwealth regulation of pilot licensing, particularly in relation to a pilot's medical fitness, may face an overhaul after recent criticisms of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's (CASA) practices in relation to pilot licensing and medical fitness. On 4 October 2013 Coroner John Hut-ton handed down his findings in relation to an inquest into the death of Barry Hempel and Ian Lovell who died following a fatal aircraft crash on the Gold Coast in 2008. The Civil Aviation Act 1988 (Cth) (the Act) places particular emphasis on preventing aviation accidents and incidents. The inquest highlights the need for aviation bodies and personnel to have due regard to the objects of the Act, that is to maintain, enhance and promote the safety of civil aviation.
