摘要

Those who served under Claire Chennault were generally devoted to "the Old Man," as they called him. The same wasn't true of those obliged to work alongside him. In the second group fell William Pawley, a clever operator who made and lost a fortune in Florida real estate before turning up in China as an airplane salesman.rnChennault was there before him, as aviation adviser to the dictator Chiang Kai-shek, and he and Pawley conceived a lively hatred for each other even as they collaborated to enlist U.S. military pilots for the Chinese air force.
