More than a century before a flock of geese flew into the engines of US Airways Flight 1549, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River, Orville Wright became the first aviator to report that a bird had struck his airplane in flight. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, that first bird strike occurred in 1905. The FAA wasn't around then, but for the last few decades it has kept a database where pilots can submit information about bird strikes. Between 1990 and 2010, more than 121,000 strikes were reported.
