Who can forget boarding a 747 for the first time? The cabin looked more like an auditorium than the passenger sections of airliners we'd been used to. And from the comments of the pilots interviewed for "747: The World's Airliner" (p. 40), you get the feeling that the cockpit is every bit as impressive as the cabin. You can see that cockpit for yourself if you visit us here at the National Air and Space Museum. In 2007, we installed the forward fuselage of the first 747 designed for Northwest Airlines, which was also the first to embark on trans-Pacific flights. The airline retired its first jumbo jet in 1999 and generously offered it to us, but even i though we were about to begin building i the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (which opened in northern Virginia in 2003).
