Most of us remember the sense of wonder we felt as we watched TV coverage of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Even though President John Kennedy had announced the goal seven years earlier, we just couldn't anticipate what it would be like to see an astronaut on the moon. The National Air and Space Museum opened in July 1976, only four years after the final Apollo mission, and today, 40 years later, visitors are still thrilled to see Apollo artifacts. This year we are proud to award the National Air and Space Museum Trophy for Lifetime Achievement to astronaut Jim Lovell, who was so important to the success of the Apollo program. As you'll read on page 18, Lovell, who is best known as mission commander of Apollo 13, made contributions throughout Gemini and Apollo that advanced our knowledge of space travel.
