"China is a country of contradictions," says pilot Leonardo Correa Luna. Born in Uruguay, Luna began his career flying in South America. Seven years ago he moved to China, where pilots are in high demand, to work as a transport pilot for Shenzhen Airlines. There he discovered that "airports have the latest technology, long runways, modern terminals, modern de-icing equipment (right), but you still see people clearing the ice with a broom (above)." The reason? The country needs to provide jobs for nearly one billion people. As a pilot, Luna has access to areas of Chinese airports most people don't see and photographs the employees who work behind the scenes to get his airplanes loaded and on the way. He finds them loading shipments in frigid weather (opposite, left) or directing aircraft at Luna's home airport, Kunming Changshui International Airport in southern China, where the high elevation and lack of factories keep the skies mostly clear (opposite, right).
