The Government's proposals to cut the level of support to the solar industry have caused a furore. The proposals will see reduced subsidies for solar electricity production and an energy efficiency requirement from April 2012. The proposals are, says the Government, part of an urgent effort to keep the feed-in-tariffs (FITs) scheme budget under control and avoid "massive" increases in energy bills that would have resulted had the scheme been allowed to continue to grow at "unsustainable" rates.
