Hauliers back Mayor's switch-off call

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has launched a campaign encouraging all drivers in the capital to switch off their engines when parked, loading or waiting at the roadside - in fact, when their vehicle is stationary for more than a minute. If all the vehicles in central London turned off their engines for as little as one minute per day, Mr Johnson explained, it could annually save PM_(10) pollution equivalent to a car travelling to the moon three times and back. His plea has already received support from a major haulage organisation. Natalie Chapman, Head of Policy for London at the Freight Transport Association (FTA), said: "Reducing engine idling, even for short periods, reduces engine emissions and improves local air quality. By cutting fuel consumption it saves money, too."
