Area Source Standards Proposed for Hospital Sterilizers

On November 6, 2006 (71 FR 64907-64917), EPA proposed two alternatives for regulating hospital sterilizers located at area sources. Under the first alternative, owners/operators of uncontrolled ethylene oxide sterilizers at hospitals that are area sources would be required to comply with a generally available management practice. The management practice would require sterilizing full loads of items having a common aeration time, except in emergency circumstances. Under the second alternative, EPA proposes to find that there are no generally available control technologies or management practices within the meaning of CAA Section 112(d)(5) for the source category.
