Three New ODS Substitutes Approved for Fire Suppression and Explosion Protection Systems

In a January 27, 2003 direct final rule (68 FR 4004―4011), EPA listed three substitutes for ozone-depleting substances (ODS) used in fire suppression and explosion protection systems. Specifically, EPA has listed: 1) hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) 227-BC as a substitute for halon 1301 in total flooding uses, 2) C6-perfluoroketone as a substitute for halon 1211 for streaming agent uses, and 3) H Galden hydrofluoro-polyethers (HFPEs) also as a substitute for halon 1211 in streaming agent uses. Each of the three ODS substitutes have been approved subject to use conditions or narrowed use limits. The January 27, 2003 direct final rule adds a new Appendix L to 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart G listing the three ODS substitutes as acceptable, and specifying the use conditions and narrowed use limits.
