Navy to Move Carrier Air Wing to Pacific

The US Navy is relocating a carrier air wing (CVW) from the east coast to the west coast as a move to rebalance its force structure to the Pacific Ocean area. According to an internal directive issued by the chief of naval operations, Commander, Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17), headquartered at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia Beach, Virginia, will move to NAS Lemoore, California, effective October 1. The move will result in six CVWs based in the Pacific area and four in the Atlantic area. The move is the first for a CVW since the mid-1960s when CVW-16 moved from the east coast to the west coast. CVW-17 has made two deployments during the past two years aboard a west coast aircraft carrier, USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), and will remain assigned to that carrier for the next four years.
