Boeing 777X Engine Concept Revealed by Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce has announced an engine concept for Boeing's proposed new 777X. The RB3025 concept is centred on an engine developing 99,500lb (440kN) thrust, with the British company claiming it will offer a 10% fuel burn saving over the General Electric GE90s powering the current 777 versions. Technology for the new engine has been derived from the Trent 1000 (which powers the 787) and the XWB being developed for the Airbus A350. The engine is the company's response to a request for information released to suppliers by the American manufacturer in 2011 as it explored developments of its popular widebody airliner (see Future Versions of 777 Explored, April, p31). Boeing refuses to comment on whether it will offer engine choices for its 777X versions, or standardise on a single powerplant. The company expects to formally launch the new 777X family in late 2012.
