The story of FanWing is an unusual one. It began with an American living in Rome, the owner of a UK company with an idea that attracted 100 investors in eight countries; an ex-BAE Systems aerodynamics expert with a wind tunnel in his garage; the support of market research firm Frost & Sullivan and commercial interest from a Chinese state-owned aircraft manufacturer. In an age when most new aircraft development is carried out by governments and large, long-established companies, the FanWing story seems more like the basis for a movie about maverick inventors.
