Fly Low, Fly Hard, Fly Safe

Flying a modern military fast jet low to the ground at high speed is demanding work. Pilots have to fly close to terrain whilst managing their aircraft's complex systems and doing so under the pressure of complex operations involving numerous aircraft. And that's before you take into account poor weather or enemy activity. The pilots of advanced combat jets have for decades stayed out of danger near the ground by using their aircraft's ground proximity warning system (GPWS).
