Flying modern frontline jets requires new skill sets because the latest generation of combat aircraft have more sophisticated cockpits than their predecessors. A gap has developed between the capabilities of frontline types and the aircraft on which student pilots train. To close the gap air forces have been forced to increase the amount of time students spend training on frontline aircraft - but this is expensive given these types' higher per-flight hour costs. There is, therefore, a growing need for new equipment that provides more advanced training and does so in less time than the legacy trainers currently in use.
