New Shore-Based Flight Deck

A land-based flight deck training facility for the Russian Navy, including the capability to practise arrested landings and ski-jump take-offs, is being built near the city of Yeisk in Krasnodar Kray. Although the complex is not scheduled for completion until 2020, training for air operations will start this August-September. The facility will remove the need to use the Soviet-era ski-jump and flight deck at Saki in the Crimea, Ukraine. Russia uses the site to train Northern Fleet pilots in carrier operations for the Admiral Kuznetsov under the terms of a 1997 bilateral agreement. Ukraine is also considering leasing the centre at Saki to other nations.
