US Navy Carrier Fleet Stretched

The number of operational aircraft carriers with the US Navy has dropped to nine after the USS Enterprise (see CWV-1 Departs 'The Big E' for the Last Time, December 2012, p4) was deactivated on December 1, 2012, and the USS Abraham Lincoln has entered dock for a four-year overhaul. Compounding the situation, the USS Nimitz- in dock for repairs - was supposed to be ready to sail in early 2013 but will now not be available until the summer.
