Joint-STARS operates with a mission crew from 14 different career fields. An E-8C is flown by a standard aircrew of pilot, co-pilot and flight engineer. A navigator sits between the cockpit and the mission crew area known as the back end. He or she 'wears two hats', providing navigation for the flight crew and working as the defensive systems operator for the mission crew, maintaining situational awareness of potential threats in the battle-space.
