The Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) is set to upgrade its fleet of four Boeing E-767 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft operated by the Keikai Kokutai at Hamamatsu. The US Department of Defense announced on October 28 that Boeing had been awarded a contract for the supply and integration of mission computing, electronic support measures, traffic alert and collision avoidance system, interrogator friend or foe (IFF) transponder, next generation IFF, automatic identification system and data link upgrades. The upgrade is being carried out through the Foreign Military Sales programme. Work will be undertaken in Seattle. Contract completion is expected by February 28, 2015.
