Final Upgraded Swiss Super Puma Redelivered

The last upgraded Swiss Air Force TH06 ISR Super Puma was handed to Armasuisse at RUAG Aviation's military maintenance and repair facility at Emmen on August 29. The redelivery concluded a project started in 2006 when the Swiss Air Force awarded RUAG a CH198 million ($212 million) contract to upgrade 15 TH89 Super Puma helicopters. The first pair was redelivered on April 2, 2012 (see Two Swiss Super Pumas Upgraded, May 2012, p42). The TH06 ISR programme included the replacement of 80% of existing instrumentation with a glass cockpit'. This comprised a new integrated flight management system, two global positioning systems, an inertial navigation system and a digital map display. The upgrade also incorporated new radio systems that provide police, encrypted radio and satellite transmissions. Flight-data recorders, an anti-collision warning system, searchlight coupled with forward looking infrared cameras and helmet-mounted displays for day and night operations with night-vision goggles, were also included in the upgrade programme.
