Around 80 aircraft from six nations took part in the 2014 edition of Pitch Black, a biennial exercise organised by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). It was held between August 1 and August 22, using Darwin and Tindal RAAF bases in the Northern Territory and Bradshaw Field Training Area and Delamere Range. More than 2,300 personnel from seven countries took part; the majority located in Darwin. One of the major goals of Pitch Black is practising large force employment, using mixed packages of diverse combat aircraft from a range of countries. This is designed to enhance interoperability between allies but also provide the RAAF with an opportunity to fight with - and against - fighter aircraft not often seen in Australian skies.
