CONCORDE SUCCESS AND CONTROVERSY

Indubitably, Concorde has been an awe-inspiring undertaking, a brilliant technical success, and a most significant boost to British and French standing in the modern world. However, now that the Anglo-French supersonic transport has been retired, it is time to look beyond the glamour as portrayed by publicists and enthusiastic journalists and confront the political, economic and technological limitations which conspired to prevent technical success from turning into commercial viability. Rene J Francillon, having looked at the programme from both sides of the Atlantic since the early 1960s, seeks to temper well-deserved pride with a bit of cold reality.
