Lulea Kallax Sweden's Northern Star

Located within Norrbotten, Sweden's largest and most northerly county, Lulea Kallax Airport is second only to Stockholm Arlanda in the number of domestic flights within Sweden and has its longest runway. The airport is Government-owned and operated by the Swedish Civil Aircraft Administration, but shares its runway, air traffic control and emergency services with the Flygvapnet (Swedish Air Force). There is a harmonious relationship between the two organisations, the Saab JAS 39 Gripens of F21 Wing housed on the opposite (south west) side of the airfield having little impact on the civil airline operations. The airport pays a commercial rate for all the services provided by the Flygvapnet and reaps the benefits of particularly well-maintained equipment on permanent availability. In return, F21 Wing is able to amortise some of its equipment and operating costs.
