Sceye's HAPS hits the heights

START-UP DEVELOPER Sceye's high-altitude platform station (HAPS) reached 64,000ft on a test flight, launching from Roswell, New Mexico, at 1120hrs local time on May 19 and recovering safely at 1330hrs after successfully undertaking tests to determine the data connection range of its systems.Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, the telecommunications standard for broadband, allows for 100km range of transmission, but according to Sceye, its system adds an additional 40km, covering areas as wide as 27,000sq miles.Sceye plans to fly its HAPS over an area of approximately 6,000sq miles to demonstrate 100Mbps download speeds.The developer is part of a consortium of New Mexico-based telecommunications companies and tribal entities - Sacred Wind Communications, CellularOne, PVT Networks, Santa Fe Indian School and Navajo Technical University - working to deliver 100% connectivity and universal broadband access to the Navajo Nation.
