In an interview with the Canadian press on March 4, Canadian Defence Minister Peter MacKay said that high-level talks were in their final stages regarding acquisition of six battlefield helicopters for operations in Afghanistan. The country had announced plans in June 2006 to acquire 16 medium- to heavy-lift helicopters to fulfil a long-standing requirement - the CH-47F Chinook was then identified as the primary candidate. That contract has yet to be finalised partly because last year Canada asked Boeing to make design changes to make their Chinooks more versatile and give them longer range.
