Aerof lot Ends 40 Years of Tu-134 Operations

Russian flag carrier Aeroflot announced on January 1 that it had finally retired the last of its Tupolev Tu-134s from service, after 40 years of operation. The final flight was from Russia's western enclave of Kaliningrad to Moscow on January 31. Aeroflot's board had approved a : plan on February 15, 2007, to gradually retire and replace its 14 remaining Tu-134s with more modern aircraft. Although there are reports that the aircraft may be transferred to the airline's regional subsidiaries, Aeroflot-Don and Aeroflot-Nord, neither carrier is thought likely to particularly want these ageing and fuel-hungry aircraft.
