Air National Guard confronts uncertainty over fighters for homeland defence

An attack on the United States is the nightmare prospect Lt Gen Harry 'Bud' Wyatt can't ignore. The top US Air National Guardsman doesn't say it, but he visualizes a crude, nuclear-tipped cruise missile being launched at an American city from a roguernship at sea. Even worse, Wyatt sees one of his Guard fighter pilots being ordered to shoot down a hijacked airliner, killing innocent passengers to save other innocents in the airliner's path.
