Asignificant new chapter in the development of the Boeing P-8A Poseidon Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft began this year when the type took to the skies on April 25 for its first flight. The US Navy plans to buy 108 of this 737-800 derivative, which uses the wings of the 737-900. These aircraft will replace the US Navy's fleet of Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft. In a similar way to its predecessor, the Poseidon will undertake anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).
