Despite the uncertain global economic outlook, 2009 looks set to be a year of expansion for Mexicana de Aviacion, which operates under the brand name Mexicana. The year was barely a few weeks old when Mexicana signalled a breakout from its traditional operating environment, the Americas, by launching the first service to Europe since its formation in 1921.rnIndeed, by the time that one of its Boeing 767-200s touched down at London's Gatwick Airport on January 18 after the l0hr 55min flight from the airline's Mexico City base, the airline was already finalising plans for its second European destination. A Mexico City-Madrid service was due to start on February 11 and the carrier refused to rule out further major growth in 2009. "We are always weighing up expansion alternatives in other markets," a Mexicana spokesperson told AIR International. Definite plans for this year include joining the oneworld airline alliance, which has British Airways, American Airlines, Iberia and Qantas among its members.
