Lufthansa has acquired a major stake in Austrian Airlines after the state holding company OEsterreichische Industrieholding Aktiengesellschaft (OEIAG, Austrian Industry Holding Company) agreed to the sale on December 5, 2008. It signed a €366,000 (￡330,680) contract that released its 41.56% stake in the Austrian carrier to the German airline. Under the deal, Austrian Airlines will retain its own corporate identity, its long-distance routes and headquarters at Vienna International Airport, all of which complied with the Austrian Government's conditions for the sale to a foreign owner.
