Sir - I found Viking Sunset, October 2008, page 44, of interest, but it contained some inconsistencies which the author, Lt Cdr Rick Burgess USN (Ret), may be able to clarify. On page 44 it is stated that "Production of 187 S-3As was completed in August 1978", then at the bottom of column two on page 45 it is stated that "a total of 199 S-3As was converted to the S-3B configuration by September 1994", after noting that "six S-3As had been converted as US-3As". Next, on page 47, we read that "In April 1991, a new variant, the ES-3A Shadow, entered service. A total of 16 S-3As were modified ..." So, altogether, 221 S-3A aircraft were modified to later versions from the 187 S-3As aircraft that were built, which, of course, just does not add up.
