NATO's Latest 'Eye in the Sky'

THE NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) system is due to reach initial operating capability in the first half of this year, following arrival in Europe of the alliance's first RQ-4D Global Hawk, which is designated Phoenix in NATO service. Stationed at Sigonella Air Base in Italy, the NATO AGS system will comprise five aircraft plus European-sourced ground command and control stations and support equipment. The initial jet arrived at Sigonella after a non-stop 22-hour flight from Palmdale, California.
