United Nations in Cote d'lvoire Receives Attack Helicopters

The United Nations Operation in Cote d'Ivoir (UNOCI) received two Mil Mi-24 attack helicopters at the beginning of March, with a third following shortly afterwards. The helicopters were transferred from the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). They will be used to escort supply helicopters and conduct reconnaissance and monitoring flights. These operations are aimed at keeping the peace between supporters loyal to Alassane Ouattara, who won November's election in the country, and President Laurent Gbagbo, who refuses to step down from power. The Mi-24s are from the 56th helicopter detachment of the Ukraine's 7th Army Aviation Regiment. Ukraine also has Mil Mi-8s flying in Cote d'lvoir.
